Alison Hammond recalls heartbreaking moment she tried to save car crash victims before they died

Alison Hammond has revealed how her outlook on life changed after she tried to save two car crash victims before they later died.

The This Morning presenter gearing up to release her memoir, You’ve Got To Laugh, looking back at her early life and rise to fame starting with Big Brother.

In one particular anecdote, Alison recalled how she was driving back from a wedding and came across a car crash, prompting her to rush to the aid of two young men who had become trapped inside their vehicle.

Speaking to Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley on Good Morning Britain, Alison explained: ‘There was a car upside down, I pulled over and the car had literally just crashed and I was the first on the scene.

‘There was a guy on the side who was crying so I left him because he was OK and I went to the car… there was a guy I couldn’t get to and a guy who was moaning.

‘I was laid on the floor in my dress and there was petrol everywhere.’

Alison wasn’t able to call for help herself due to mobile phones not existing at the time, and she was advised against trying to help one of the men as she ‘could paralyse him’.

Referring to another samaritan, she continued: ‘He went and got some help but it seemed like ages. I was talking to this guy, he was alive and everything.

‘The paramedics came and took him away. I was really shaken on the next home.’

Her ordeal only worsened the following day when she read the newspaper and discovered both men had died.

‘It really shook me,’ she explained. ‘Like look how these young boys – they were only 18 – and one of them had stolen their dad’s car, and they’d just lost their lives like that.’

Presenter Richard weighed in: ‘There’s a thin line between life and death isn’t it? It’s as thin as thin can be.’

Sharing how it changed her life, Alison added: ‘I thought, do you know what in life, you’ve just got to grab it. Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks, don’t live your life for everybody else, live it for yourself.’

The 46-year-old recently opened up about another life-changing moment, revealing how one moment during her interview with Matt Damon in 2007 spurred her on to lose weight.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
