Allow Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones’ first Normal People audition together to break your heart

Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones’ first audition for Normal People has resurfaced and it’s just about breaking our hearts.

The pair became overnight sensations back in April thanks to the coming-of-age Irish drama, with their chemistry making us fall in love with them both over and over again.

Turns out, that chemistry was obvious right from the word go, with the audition, released by British Vogue, taking place in a bland room as they go through their lines.

Not even police sirens blaring out the window could cut the tension in the breathtaking scene.

In the scene, the duo are transformed easily into Marianne and Connell, during an argument over where their relationship lies.

Taking place during their final school years, Marianne and Connell have started their secret sexual exploits, but Marianne confronts him after he’s seen flirting with other girls.

It’s clear the pair had chemistry from the start (Picture: BBC)

Considered one of the cool kids at school, Connell is deathly afraid of what his mates would think of him with the unpopular Marianne, and so allowed his mates to make fun of her without stepping in.

Angry, she confronts him, becoming tired of not being supported, even as a mate.

Connell then admits that he would be annoyed if she was to find someone else, causing her to ask: ‘You don’t mind that I’m ugly, and flat-chested?’

‘I’m sorry they said that to you, they don’t even think that themselves,’ he then tells her, putting his arm around her. ‘If Eric thought he even had the slightest chance with you he’s be talking very differently. He just thinks you look down on him.’

The complicated couple became one of the biggest TV talking points of 2020 (Picture: BBC)

Kissing her on the head as she curls into him, he tries to make her laugh and jokes: ‘You have nothing to worry about your appearance. I don’t just like you for your brains, I’m actually very shallow, so….’

No wonder Daisy was so terrified to get the role.

And suddenly we’re in dire need to go and binge watch the whole series again.

Despite their success, the duo haven’t been able to celebrate it together properly since… thanks, coronavirus.

At least they were able to reunite for a mini bonus episode in the name of charity, and could see each other at the Baftas… even if they were kept apart the entire time.

Normal People is available now on BBC iPlayer, and will be released on DVD in the UK and Ireland on 2 November. Pre-order now via AmazonHMV, and Zavvi.
