As we wait for Ryan Murphy’s hit anthology series American Horror Story to return for season 10, what do we know about the upcoming series?

Ever since 2011, Ryan and American Horror Story co-creator Brad Falchuk have been devising new ways to delight and terrify their audiences with a variety of spine-chilling tales.

From Murder House to Freak Show, Asylum and Apocalypse, American Horror Story fans are always fascinated to hear what the new season of the show will bring.

Plus, they can always look forward to several familiar faces popping up as brand new – and returning – characters as the various storylines interweave.

Here’s everything you need to know about the mysterious season 10 of American Horror Story.

What has Ryan Murphy said about AHS season 10?

On Wednesday 11 November, American Horror Story co-creator Ryan shared a new poster for the upcoming tenth season.

The poster features a close-up picture of a person’s mouth, their lips painted red and their teeth razor sharp.

The phrase ‘AHS10 FX’ has been inked on the individual’s tongue, indicating that the season will be shown on American television network FX.

While Ryan shared the new poster without a caption, the official Instagram account for American Horror Story shared the picture with the caption: ‘Look sharp.’

Leslie Grossman, who’s starred in American Horror Story since series seven, commented on Ryan’s post, writing: ‘Ouch.’

‘You should be very afraid,’ Ryan teased Leslie in response.

What could the theme for season 10 be?

While some have speculated that the new season of American Horror Story could feature vampires or aliens, the overriding assumption is that the tenth series will have something to do with a sea creature of some kind.

Many people on Instagram and Twitter have expressed their views that season 10 could focus on mermaids or sirens, creatures who, according to mythology, lured sailors to their doom with their enchanting voices.

‘Sirens?! Mermaids?!’ one person wrote on Instagram.

‘Basically Sarah Paulson playing a fish,’ someone else tweeted about the Ratched actor.

In March this year, before filming was halted by the Covid-19 outbreak, Ryan shared a post on Instagram with the slogan: ‘Things are beginning to wash up on shore.’

A couple of months later, the screenwriter warned that the theme for season 10 may have to be scrapped due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ryan told The Wrap that a lot of what was going to be filmed for the series ‘was dependent on a very specific moment’, describing the show as being ‘weather dependent’.

‘So, now, I don’t know. I don’t know what we’re going to do. I don’t know what I’m gonna do next with that show. I don’t know if I’ll accelerate another season or wait ’til next year to shoot this one,’ he said.

However later that month, Ryan shared a photograph on Instagram of a sandy beach, with the caption: ‘American Horror Story. Clue.’

We won’t know for certain until the theme is officially announced.

When is American Horror Story season 10 being released?

In May, it was reported that American Horror Story season 10 had been delayed until 2021, having previously been scheduled to be released in autumn 2020.

The same month, Ryan expressed his hope that filming for the season would be able to resume over summer, after production was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Who is in the cast for season 10?

Last year, it was announced that several former American Horror Story stars were returning for the show’s tenth season.

In February, Ryan shared a video on Instagram revealing a list of actors who will be appearing in the new season.

The list included several familiar names, including Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Evan Peters and Billie Lourd, Angelica Ross and Adina Porter – in addition to newcomer Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin.

What is Ryan Murphy’s newly-announced American Horror Stories?

Shortly after unveiling the new poster for American Horror Story season 10, Ryan also shared a poster for American Horror Stories on Instagram, an upcoming AHS spin-off show.

The poster features a woman with what looks like a cracked doll face, revealing a spider weaving a web underneath.

While Ryan shared the poster without a caption, he revealed details about the upcoming series in the comment section.

‘It’s the AHS spin off. We are doing 16 one-hour standalone episodes delving into horror myths, legends and lore… many of these will feature AHS stars you know and love. More to follow…’ he wrote.

Several former American Horror Story stars commented on the post, expressing their excitement.

In response to a comment left by actor Dylan McDermott, Ryan wrote: ‘Gonna have some good stuff for you in this big daddy,’ adding in a message to actor Cody Fern: ‘Writing something for you too Mr Fern!!!!’

American Horror Story season 10 is set to air on American television network FX in 2021.

American Horror Story seasons one to eight are available to stream on Netflix. Season 9 is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime.
