Anastacia won season three of The Masked Singer Australia this week, but she was hiding a secret during her time on the show.
The singer, 53, told The Project the day after her win that she’d undergone neck surgery in the summer.
The Left Outside Alone hitmaker had two herniated discs that were ‘pretty much on top of each other’ so surgery was recommended by a doctor – but performing in an elaborate vampire costume wasn’t.
‘My doctor just said you need to get these fixed. Like putting a mask on and doing a show is asking for trouble,’ she shared.
Anastacia described her costume as being ‘really top heavy’ and referred to it as ‘a beast,’ and she faced other challenges alongside trying to conceal her identity from the judges.
The popstar had to completely relearn how to move around on stage so she could balance the artistic mask while her neck was healing.
The I’m Outta Love songstress opened up about her neck procedure on Instagram in June, confessing she’d been struggling for a while.
Talking to her 218k followers, she said: ‘I’m sure not many of you knew I had 2 very bad herniated discs in my neck going on 20+ years now. Even 10 years ago I was told surgery is your only option.’
She was ‘terribly worried’ about how surgery could affect her vocals, so she ‘just put it off’ before things got worse last year.
‘Beginning of 2020 while touring in New Zealand some of my band members decided to go paragliding,’ she began.
‘Weeeeellllll, let’s just say, there was no gliding or sailing done in the adventure. Instead it felt like I was in a cyclone. Not to mention the part that probably whacked my neck worse was, my tandem partner and his selfie stick proceeded to have a full on photo shoot during this adventure.’
However, upon returning home in February – not before performing two sold-out festivals – it ‘didn’t take long for the real pain to kick in.’
After seeing a doctor and being encouraged to have surgery once again, she decided to have the problem solved in 2021 after getting vaccinated.
Detailing the procedure, she said: ‘I had two artificial discs placed to replace my severely collapsed discs at C5-6 and C6-7 using the Nuvasive Simplify Disc replacement devices.’
The singer wanted to share her personal journey to inspire others, writing: ‘Don’t look at surgery as the end. It’s actually a new beginning.’
Anastacia became champion of The Masked Singer Australia on Tuesday, making her the first American singer to win the show.
She beat stiff competition from comedian Em Rusciano who was runner up as Dolly, and TV host Axle Whitehead who placed third as Mullet.
Following a series of memorable performances – including Holding Out For a Hero – Anastacia said she ‘loved every uncomfortable minute’ of her time on the ‘incredible’ show.Credit: Original article published here.
