And Just Like That star Cynthia Nixon has addressed Samantha Jones’ absence from the Sex And The City reboot, insisting that they ‘love the character’.
Long before the sequel series premiered, fans expressed their disappointment that cast member Kim Cattrall would not be returning.
The actor famously had a fall-out with her co-star Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays Carrie Bradshaw, with it being explained in the new show that Samantha moves to London after feuding with her former best friend.
Despite criticism over the way in which Samantha’s storyline was handled, including the fact that she didn’t provide better support for Carrie in her devastating time of need, Cynthia, who plays Miranda Hobbes, ‘loves’ the way the narrative played out.
‘I really love it, I think it’s great – the way we address it, head on,’ she told Elle UK, refraining from specifically mentioned Kim’s absence from the show after her former co-star appeared in Sex And The City and the two subsequent film sequels.
In the first episode, Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) explain Samantha’s move to London, before opening up in private about how their friendship with her has fractured.
‘We reveal that there are layers to it,’ Cynthia said.
‘There’s what you tell casual acquaintances is the situation, and then when you’re left alone and discuss it amongst yourselves, we get to a deeper level of sadness and confusion about it.’
She continued to express her admiration for Samantha as a character, stating: ‘We love this character, and we want to show great respect for her.’
Kim hasn’t spoken publicly about her feelings regarding And Just Like That since the new episodes have been released.
Nonetheless, she has appeared to react to the off-screen portrayal of her character by liking several fans’ supportive tweets.
One of the tweets she liked read: ‘Kim Cattrall didn’t return to SATC because her scatting career is finally taking off.’
Meanwhile, another person wrote: ‘And just like that… I find myself only wanting to watch anything @KimCattrall is in. This is a Kim appreciation tweet.’
In 2019, the How I Met Your Father star explained why she would not be reprising her role, stating: ‘It’s a “no” from me. You learn lessons in life and my lesson is to do work with good people and try and make it fun.’
And Just Like That is available to watch on Sky Comedy and on NOW.
