GB News presenters including Alastair Stewart and Colin Brazier have paid tribute to Andrew Neil following the news that he has quit as chair of the news channel.

In a statement released by GB News, it said that Andrew, 72, is stepping down from his roles as chairman and host of his primetime show, while remaining a part of the channel as a regular guest commentator.

Andrew said that he was ‘sorry to go’, but had ‘concluded it’s time to reduce my commitments on a number of fronts’, having used the summer ‘to reflect on my extensive portfolio of interests and decided it was time to cut back’.

Several of the presenters working for GB News shared messages on Twitter in response to his resignation, with Colin – who had taken Andrew’s place in his primetime slot during his break – describing him as ‘an inspiration to all of us at GB News’.

‘We look forward to seeing him again on the channel as a contributor. And, yes, having minded the shop for a few weeks, it’ll be nice to have my name above the door,’ Colin tweeted.

Alastair expressed his disappointment over seeing Andrew step back from his roles at the firm.

‘I am so very sorry that @afneil is stepping back from his original roles but I am delighted he’ll still be doing stuff for @GBNEWS,’ the former ITV News host said.

‘I will miss not having him around as much – as a friend, mentor and master broadcaster.’

GB News political correspondent Tim Harwood wrote: ‘Andrew Neil is a titan of broadcasting, real news journalism, integrity, and the reason I joined GBN.

‘Was an honour to broadcast alongside him in our first weeks on air.’

Former BBC newsreader Simon McCoy simply retweeted Andrew’s message about his resignation, while Nigel Farage announced that he will be interviewing Andrew about his ‘new role as contributor and commentator for the channel’ on GB News this evening at 7pm.

In the press release sent out by GB News, Andrew said that he wishes GB News well ‘in continuing to fulfil its founding promise and mission to reach audiences currently underserved by existing news broadcasters’.

GB News said that Andrew ‘is without doubt one of the finest journalists and interviewers in this country’, adding: ‘GB News thanks him for his 12 months of leadership, wisdom and advice and we wish him well.’
