Anita Rani has said that it’s time more women presented quiz shows ahead of the launch of her upcoming new programme The Answer Trap.

The British public is known for enjoying a quiz show or two, from the intense gameplay of The Chase to the supremely competitive University Challenge.

Countryfile host Anita is soon set to launch a brand new quizzing programme on Channel 4, which will see contestants try to distinguish between real answers for various categories and fake ‘answer traps’.

During a recent conversation the former Strictly Come Dancing contestant explained that she’s wanted to present her own quiz show for several years, having ‘always loved’ them since childhood.

‘I’ve kind of been talking about it for ages, I’ve mentioned it, I’ve put it out into the universe quite a lot the last few years, I’ve mentioned it in a few interviews. So finally it happened, Channel 4 paid attention,’ she said.

Anita noted that ‘there’s enough men that present quiz shows’, stating: ‘It’s time some women got in on the action as well’.

‘My motivation was just I want to present a quiz show, but it’s very obvious that there’s space for more women to be hosting them,’ she said.

Anita paid homage to several women who have already helmed their own shows, including Sandi Toksvig, who took over from Stephen Fry as the host of QI in 2016, and Anne Robinson, who is set to become the new Countdown host.

‘We have got Victoria Coren Mitchell who does an amazing job, Sandi Toksvig obviously, Anne Robinson is about to do Countdown, which I’m really excited about. She did Weakest Link as well,’ Anita said.

‘It wasn’t my motivation, but it’s nice that I’m in that space that is so dominated by men. And I did get a nice congratulatory note from the king of quiz Richard Osman himself, so I feel like I’ve been blessed.’

The Answer Trap will see two teams go head-to-head in a bid to win a grand prize of £10,000.

In each round, the players are presented with a list of answers that they need to sort into correct categories to win sums of money.

However, resident quiz experts Frank Paul and Bobby Seagull have hidden ‘answer traps’ within the list of answers, which are options that have been designed to seem like right answers but don’t belong in either category.

If a team accidentally chooses one answer trap, in a round, then they get a warning. However, if they choose a second, then the round is over for them.

At the end of the third round, the team with the post money in their pot goes through to the final for the chance to either play for their winnings or go for the full £10,000.

But, if they decide not to go home with their winnings and then fall into the maximum two answer traps, then they will go home empty-handed.

The Answer Trap launches on Monday May 10 at 3pm on Channel 4 and All 4.
