Geordie duo Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly expressed they were taken aback by the public’s reaction to their fierce drag performance on Saturday Night Takeaway.
In February, the presenters teamed up with the winners of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK to perform their new charity song, titled We Werk Together much to the delight of many viewers up and down the country.
Ant and Dec gave The Vivienne, Lawrence Chaney and Krystal Versace a run for their money as they transformed into Lady Antoinette and Miss Donna Lee.
While fans praised the impressive routine, television watchdog Ofcom reported that 59 people complained about the scenes at hand.
During Sunday’s Bafta TV Awards, the pair expressed how proud they were over the performance as it gave ‘people courage to be themselves’.
‘When we had the idea of doing the Drag Act, we wanted to do it properly, and we wanted to do it right,’ said Dec.
‘We wanted to be respectful of the art form and we didn’t want it to look silly, we’d slapped on a bit of lipstick and eyeshadow and then walked out in wonky heels.’
He continued: ‘But then we got a load of messages from people saying how inspirational, and that was something we hadn’t really catered for. So it was yeah, it was a mind-blowing surprising, but it was quite moving as well.’
During last night’s prestigious event, Ant and Dec won the award for best entertainment programme for Saturday Night Takeaway which was filmed during lockdown, sometimes even from their own homes.
‘We’re thrilled to be able to do this job and still get away with it after all these years. It means more now than it ever did before,’ Ant said.
It came after the pair admitted in their speech they were ‘convinced’ they wouldn’t be receiving any awards this year.
