Channel 4 is receiving backlash from fans after it was reported that a popular prison drama had been ‘axed’.
Screw, which stars Jamie-Lee O’Donnell from Derry Girls, Nina Sosanya from W1A, and Stephen Wight from Silent Witness, premieres in January 2022.
The series followed a group of officials and convicts at a male penitentiary, drawing inspiration from the show’s writer Rob Williams’ own prison employment.
One of the cast members has since said that Screw would not be renewed following the second season, which aired in 2017.
Sharing a promotional poster on Instagram, Ben Tavassoli – who played the character Louis Costa – wrote in his caption: ‘Unfortunate news that this is where our journey ends for Screw.
‘Want to thank you guys so much for tuning in. All your kind words went a long way.
‘Love everyone who was part of the show, very lucky to have made dear friends for life.’
Fans expressed their disappointment at the news in the comments section of Ben’s article.
‘Ahhh no , really thought there would have been another season, pity, but was brilliant 👏,’ wrote Dave.
‘That’s sad. I loved the show,’ said Steve, while Claire added: ‘Loved this show! Gutted!’
One viewer called Donna sounded particularly shocked, commenting: ‘What! Nooooo! Loved the show.’
While Shane appeared confused by the update, stating: ‘I thought there were plans for a new series? 🤔.’
Channel 4 and other cast members have yet to respond on social media to the apparent cancellation of the drama.
Screw followed 21-year-old Rose (Jamie-Lee) as she started working as a new trainee at Long Marsh jail under the supervision of jail officer Leigh (Nina).
The other officers on the crew were the hopeful Ali (Faraz Ayub), the pompous Gary (Stephen), the plain-spoken Jackie (Laura Checkley), and the sluggish Don (Ron Donachie).
Screw is available to stream on demand on Channel 4.
