Bafta TV Awards 2022: New Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa insists he’s careful with spoilers

Ncuti Gatwa may be the talk of the town as the new Time Lord, taking over in Doctor Who from Jodie Whittaker, but the star has insisted he won’t be giving away any spoilers.

The 29-year-old was announced as the 14th Doctor today, after teasing posts on Instagram.

Speaking after the Doctor Who announcement, in a video shared by the official Bafta account on Twitter, Ncuti said: ‘I’m quite good, I don’t like to spoil things for others.

‘If I know someone is going to watch something I won’t say nothing, I won’t talk about, I’ll let them watch it by themselves.’

The Sex Education actor, who rose to fame in his role as Etic Effiong, is nominated in the best male performance in a comedy programme at the Bafta TV Awards today.

Ncuti up against Stath Lets Flats’ Jamie Demetriou, Steve Coogan and Tim Renkow for his role in Jerk.

Elsewhere on the red carpet, Gatwa shared how ’emotional’ it’s been.

‘I woke up crying, and then I was dancing, but I’m glad it’s finally out and I don’t have to keep it a secret anymore, because I’m terrible.’

Davies and Gatwa confirmed he’d been keeping it a secret since February.

‘There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling,’ Gatwa said of his new role. ‘A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared.

‘This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care.

‘I will endeavour my upmost to do the same.’

He continued: ‘Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger.

‘An actor’s metaphorical playground. The entire team have been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show.

‘And so as much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.’
