Great British Bake Off host Matt Lucas has revealed that he lost his hair at just six years of age.
The comedian and presenter spoke about his insecurities during Saturday’s episode of The Jonathan Ross show, saying that he developed comedy characters to deal with them.
‘I started out actually always in character because I think growing up, I lost my hair when I was six,’ he said on the programme.
‘I was ashamed of being gay, struggled with weight. Other challenging things happened in the family. I wanted to be a stand up comedian.’
He went on to say: ‘I felt I could be more honest in character than I could be as myself. Actually, even just doing Bake Off as myself for me there’s a vulnerability there I guess to some extent.’
The comedian appeared on the show alongside Liam Gallagher, Grayson Perry, Jon Richardson, Lucy Beaumont and Lady Leshurr.
Speaking to Oasis singer Liam, Matt also revealed how he was cast in the video for Blur’s Country House by mistake.
‘I think it was a case of mistaken identity. Damien Hirst and Keith Allen who were the directors of the Country House video asked Vic and Bob, ‘Who’s that bald guy you work with?’ They were thinking of Les from the Big Night Out. But, then they suggested me. So I think I was cast by mistake in that video.’
Finally, Matt performed a special version his new charity single Merry Christmas, Baked Potato with Lady Leshurr.
The Jonathan Ross Show continues on Saturday at 9.35pm on ITV.
