Bake Off 2021: Do contestants pay for their ingredients?

The Great British Bake Off is in full-swing for 2021 – with the bakers both impressing with their edible creations and, in some cases, leaving fans with nightmares.

It must cost a pretty penny to whip up so many culinary delights throughout the series – as well as taking plenty of time to practice.

We have some idea of how much the judges get paid for their knowledge – and we know that winners get a snazzy title, but no prize fund.

But how much does it cost to make the bakes? And do the contestants have to shell out the cash themselves?

Here’s what we know.

No, Bake Off contestants don’t appear to be responsible for putting up funds.

We know this because 2017’s winner, Sophie Faldo, explained as much in an interview.

She once shared: ‘You’re essentially given expenses… You’re given an allowance for however many shows you do to source the ingredients.’

This would suggest that Channel 4’s producers stump up the money to pay for the bakes.

However, ingredients used during the audition process are paid for out of pocket and aren’t reimbursed by the show – even when the baker makes it to the famous GBBO tent.

Fortunately, though, contestants don’t need to nip to the shops to get ingredients themselves.

That’s the responsibility of Faenia Moore, Bake Off’s chief home economist, who told BBC Good Food:

‘I filter through recipes and compile a list of ingredients a week before each episode is filmed, then I do a massive shop.

‘There’s a prep kitchen in the tent with our fridges and flour bins. A day before filming, I make up trays for each contestant, with ingredients they’ll need in Kilner jars.

‘People normally have 12-20 ingredients, but it varies – Frances Quinn had 124 for her cake in the final.’

Sorry, this video isn’t available any more.

Contestants aren’t paid a fee for appearing on Bake Off, but they do film solidly on weekends – meaning that they don’t have to take unpaid leave from or quit their day jobs.

Hopefully, the money comes when their baking career takes off. Just look at the success of former GBBO stars John Whaite and Nadiya Hussain.

The Great British Bake Off airs on Tuesdays at 9pm on Channel 4.
