Bake Off 2021: Series 12 opener suffers lowest launch ratings in years

Great British Bake Off returned to Channel 4 last night, for a glorious series 12 launch.

After months of waiting, judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith were on hand to analyse the creations of a fresh batch of contestants, as presenters Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas attempted to calm the chaos in the tent down.

However, while we were all thrilled to have the programme back on the TV schedule, it suffered the lowest ratings in years.

The premiere attracted 5.7million viewers, which is 1.3m down from last year, and the lowest launch since the show moved to Channel 4 from BBC.

Things kicked off in bizarre style as Noel, Matt and Paul performed a pun-infused version of Billy Cyrus’ Achy Breaky Heart in front of the tent.

But it wasn’t a great start for some as contestant Tom became the first to be booted out of the new season, as he failed to impress the judges, while Jurgen clinched the coveted star baker title.

The budding bakers were tasked with making decorative mini rolls in the signature, a malt loaf in the technical and a gravity-defying showstopper.

Unfortunately for Tom, he slipped up on the final showstopper challenge, which he confessed himself was ‘a bit of a disaster’.

‘Well, that’s that then! Although my time in the Bake Off tent may have been short, it certainly has been very sweet,’ he said in an emotional exit letter after he was axed.

‘I’d always dreamed of one day making it into the tent, but never truly believed it would happen, so I feel honoured to have had this opportunity!

‘Being part of the show has been a fantastic journey from start to finish; I’ve learnt a huge amount of new baking skills, had the chance to experience life on a TV set, and most importantly, made an amazing bunch of new friends!

‘Everyone I’ve met as part of this experience has been fantastic, from the cast to the crew (especially those lumbered with the washing up!) and I’d like t thank them all for being genuinely amazing!’

Concluding his message, Tom added: ‘Thanks for all of your support and I hope you all achieve your dreams too!’

Great British Bake Off continues on Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
