Carol Kirkwood has been left heartbroken after the death of her beloved pet cat Donald.

The BBC weather presenter announced that her 20-year-old rescue had died last week, and that his passing has not yet sunk in.

‘This just doesn’t seem real….a week ago today, my gorgeous wee Donald closed his eyes for the last time… he was my joy and I loved him unconditionally,’ Carol wrote in a statement on Twitter.

‘I miss his company, his affection, and his quirky wee personality. He will live on in my broken heart forever.’

Many fans rallied around Carol after hearing the devastating news, and shared their warm regards.

In a later tweet, Carol penned: ‘Thank you ALL for your kind words about my wee pussycat Donald. I got him from Cat Protection when he was 6 weeks old….and we have been together for the last 20 years.

‘He will always be my darling boy.’

Former EastEnders star Annette Badland sent her condolences, and wrote: ‘Carol I know how very hard it is. I hold you, virtually. Much love, Annette. He will always be with you.’

Meanwhile, Gavin And Stacey’s Larry Lamb added: ‘Thoughts with you Carol !! x’

Earlier this year, fellow BBC star Monty Don was left bereft when his pet dog Nigel died.

The delightful dog, who appeared with Monty on the BBC Two show, had suffered from an illness, but is now buried with ‘lots of tennis balls’ in the backyard.

‘I am very sorry to announce that Nigel has died,’ Monty wrote ant the time. ‘To the end he was happy, healthy and his usual calm, lovely self.

‘But he was suddenly taken ill and he slipped quietly away with no pain or suffering and is now buried in the garden with lots of tennis balls.

‘Rest now old friend. See you in the sweet bye and bye.’
