For Annabel Croft, Strictly Come Dancing is about more than simply acquiring a new ability; the BBC show is also helping the former tennis star deal with her loss.
The 57-year-old enrolled in the programme after her late husband, Mel Coleman, died of cancer in May at the age of 60. After two months of stomach discomfort, he was diagnosed with stage three cancer and died within eight weeks.
She shared the devastating news on social media: ‘My beloved Mel passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning after a short battle with cancer.’
‘My family and I are completely heartbroken and ask for privacy at this very sad time.’
Annabel has since stated that her involvement was a pleasant distraction from her “dark thoughts.”
‘It’s [Strictly] been a nice distraction from grief’ she stated on Lorraine with her dancing partner Johannes Radebe.
‘It’s been nice to do something joyful and use my body, and try to rest my brain from thinking too many dark thoughts.’
Her inclusion in the series is extra special as Coleman was a huge Strictly fan, and he especially enjoyed watching 36-year-old Johannes.
‘He was a huge fan of this gorgeous man,’ Annabel told Lorraine Kelly.
The presenter then offered some words of encouragement, assuring the two they were on the right track to continue improving.
‘I know it’s a competition, and everyone focuses on that and asks us about the glitterball, but we’re just thinking about each dance and enjoying the moment,’ presenter Annabel replied.
Annabel and Johannes received a score of 28 for their Saturday night performance of Katrina & The Waves’ Walking On Sunshine.
Craig Revel Horwood was really dissatisfied and pulled out his four paddle.
When asked about the verdict, Annabel replied it was “a little harsh,” but she is understanding.
‘I have to take it in on the chin,’ she stated.
‘I wouldn’t expect to get a load of praise every time I dance.’
Despite the criticism, Annabel and Johannes made it through the first elimination, which saw Les Dennis leave the competition, and will now be facing a Breakfast at Tiffany’s themed waltz for movie week.
Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV1. Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 6:20pm on BBC One.
