BBC’s The Serpent Looks Back at the Wild Life of Serial Killer Charles Sobhraj

It’s no secret that we as a society have a bizarre obsession with watching true crime on TV. That’s especially the case for 2020, a year in which many of us have watched pretty much every show that every streaming platform has to offer, which has inevitably included a lot of shows and movies about, well, serial killers. So if you’ve already finished The Undoing and The Ripper and you’re worried about running out of things to watch to fill the true crime shaped hole, don’t be, because BBC’s new show is about to change the game entirely.

The Serpent takes a look at serial killer Charles Sobhraj (played by Tahar Rahim), also known as ‘The Bikini Killer’ (yikes) who was eventually found and put on trial in 1976. In 8 episodes, the show takes us from Sobhraj’s early life, in which he frequently goes by the name Alain, to his later years where he meets his then wife Marie-Andrée Leclerc (played by Jenna Coleman). The show follows junior diplomat Herman Knippenberg as he tries to solve a number of missing people cases, whilst being met with countless obstacles, until his evidence leads him directly to Sobhraj.

On the topic of the show, Coleman told Stylist: “The Serpent intoxicated me into the dark seductive world of Charles Sobhraj. I’m so looking forward to delving into hippie trail depths and bringing to life this unfathomable real life story.” Taking inspiration from the gem dealing in Uncut Gems and the iconic seventies looks from Mad Men, mixed with elements of the gruesome deaths in You, The Serpent looks to be a dark, but oddly fashionable watch.
