Ben Shephard defends ‘perfect’ viral Tipping Point answer after contestant confuses Homer Simpson with epic poet

Tipping Point host Ben Shephard has come to the defence of the contestant who stunned the internet with his wrong answer about the poet Homer.

On the quiz show, Dom, a school teacher from Manchester, managed to mix up Greek poet Homer with cartoon character Homer Simpson.

Chatting about the iconic moment, which was dubbed the ‘greatest wrong answer ever’, Ben laughed: ‘Bless him, Dom was such a lovely guy.

‘It’s so funny because I was away and all of a sudden I just started getting notifications of this clip and it got cut right down… It’s just such a perfect answer but of course everyone thought it was Homer Simpson!’

His Good Morning Britain co-host Kate Garraway admitted she knew exactly the kind of pressure Dom was under on the show, adding: ‘It depends where your head is at the moment the question is being asked! I’ve experienced Tipping Point, all things can happen!’

‘Whoever said TV was dumbing down?’ Dr Hilary Jones chimed in.

Meanwhile, the team couldn’t blame Dom too much for his wrong answer, as Ben almost struggled to get the question right in the studio – after filming the scenes and having the answer to hand.

The unbelievable scene happened when Dom was asked a question on one of the greatest and most influential writers of all time.

‘In his epic poems, Homer often refers to nectar as the drink of the gods and which other substance as their food?’ Ben quizzed.

Without missing a beat, Dom replied: ‘I know he likes doughnuts’, of course, referring to The Simpsons character’s obsession with the sugary treat.

The camera then cut to Ben, who stood with his mouth wide open looking completely stunned.

But the mayhem didn’t stop there as Ben then asked competitor Lindsey what she would have answered.

‘I would have said doughnuts as well,’ she said, nodding her head. ‘Yes, beer and doughnuts.’

Eventually, after Ben re-read the question, the pair realised their crucial mistake.

While they had a bit of a nightmare on the show, they definitely won hearts across the country with the hilarious moment.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV. Tipping Point airs weekdays at 4pm on ITV.
