Hallie’s mother has responded to the way she handled Farida’s line of questions when she was asked about the sexuality of the guys who are attracted to her.
Since its debut, the new ITV reality series has exposed fans to a diverse range of characters, from the lovely and humble Yinrun to the rowdy Olivia.
Farida, 50, turned to Hallie, 18, shortly after their initial encounter to learn more about her transgender journey, saying, ‘You know the men that are attracted to you – would they be classed as gay?’
Hallie calmly explained why that wouldn’t be the case, stating: ‘I’m a woman,’ before adding: ‘I don’t see them as gay, I see them as liking a woman. There’s different types of sexualities, I just think nowadays people don’t like putting labels on things. They like what they like.
‘But at the end of the day, I’m a woman. So if a guy was to get with me and be gay, that’s calling me a man.’
While some condemned Farida’s method of questioning, others pointed out that she looked to be asking with no malice, and Hallie was ready to share her own story in answer.
Hallie’s mother Samantha was asked how pleased she was of her daughter in the house during an appearance on Big Brother: Late & Live, the sister show to the main show, after the panel briefly covered the aforementioned exchange with Farida.
‘So proud, she’s handled it so well. She’s coming out, just being herself. And it’s just lovely to see the whole world now to see and know the real Hallie that I know,’ Samantha told presenter Will Best.
‘Is she always this mature and considered in her responses to all sorts of things?’ he asked.
‘She is,’ Samantha replied.
‘She’s very grown up. She’s had to grow up fast. I had to bring her up fast to comply with the world that she’s going to be brought up in because of being trans, she’s going to have different conflicts and she’s just got to deal with them correctly. She’s proven that in the Big Brother house.’
Will then questioned Samantha if Hallie would have objected to the path her conversation with Farida had taken.
‘No, not at all,’ the Big Brother star’s mum insisted.
‘Like she said over there, she knows when to stop it if a line gets crossed, but she also knows that she does have to explain as well, because some people, they don’t know.’
Hallie revealed to the other Big Brother inmates that she is trans shortly after entering the house.
She was welcomed with a surge of love and many hugs before the rest of the celebs walked around expressing their pronouns in a poignant display of solidarity.
Big Brother returns tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
