On Friday’s edition of The Chase, the Conservative Government took centre stage with a question that did not reflect well on them.
The current episode of the weekday quiz show was in progress when the conversation turned to politics, and contestant Phillip was asked how many persons served in a certain capacity in the Cabinet in 2022.
As host Bradley Walsh began to read the question aloud, he couldn’t help but chuckle: ‘How many Chancellors of the Exchequer were there in 2022?’
Spoiler: As you recall, there were quite a few!
As the audience and contestants joined in with the laughter, Bradley quipped: ‘Oh here goes, it’s a lottery here…’
‘Get your fingers out – add up everyone!’ he added.
The response alternatives were three, four, or five.
Phillip, 47, went up against Jenny Ryan, 41, widely known as The Vixen, a tough Chaser airline pilot.
After deciding on his answer, he and Bradley came up with the choices of current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Kwasi Kwarteng as two options.
Jenny added: ‘There was Zahawi at one point..’
She then admitted: ‘There’s about two years of politics and cabinet that’s just blended into one for me now!’ (Same.)
Phillip’s guess of three was then shown to be incorrect as Bradley explained he was hoping that ‘the Chaser has mixed them all up a bit and not added them up correctly’.
Jenny went for five, proving this to be true.
‘I got to four and then thought I’ll add one for luck,’ she laughed, cracking Bradley and the studio up with her candour.
In the calendar year 2022, there were four Chancellors of the Exchequer: Mr Sunak was nominated to the position in February 2020 by then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and he resigned in July 2022.
He was quickly succeeded by Nadhim Zahawi, who served for a day over two months until September 6, 2022, when he was replaced by Kwasi Kwarteng, the pick of incoming Prime Minister Liz Truss.
Mr. Kwarteng was ousted after only five weeks and one day in office due to his unpopular’mini-budget’ ideas.
Former Health Secretary and Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt was subsequently appointed chancellor in October 2022, and he is still in office after outlasting the previous two chancellors multiple times.
Ironically, no one mentioned him.
The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV1.
