Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan posts behind-the-scenes videos of cast singing her happy birthday on set

Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan has shared a behind-the-scenes look at how her birthday celebrations unfolded last year on the set of the period drama, complete with several melodic renditions of ‘Happy Birthday’ by her cast mates.

On Saturday, Nicola celebrated her 34th birthday.

To mark the occasion, the Derry Girls star decided to throwback to her 33rd birthday last year, which took place while she was filming the first season of Bridgerton, on which she plays Penelope Featherington.

Sharing a post on Twitter and Instagram about her 2020 birthday festivities, Nicola wrote: ‘For this year’s birthday I think I’m just gonna relive last year’s birthday where I was on set and I got THREE CAKES and had Happy Birthday sung to me more times than I’ve ever had, it was wonderful. Love you #Bridgerton fam.’

In the first video, Nicola can be seen blowing out the candles on a birthday cake as members of the crew sing to her in a make-up trailer, the actor spinning on her chair with glee as she thanks everyone for their well-wishes.

In the second video, Nicola’s cast mates, including Harriet Cains, Ruby Barker and Jonathan Bailey, sing her another round of ‘Happy Birthday’ while sitting around an elegant dining table.

As the camera pans around the room, Death in Paradise actor Ben Miller can be spotted filming the sing-along on his smartphone.

She added that if someone would like ‘Happy Birthday’ sung to them ‘multiple times’ on their birthday, ‘may I suggest working with a bunch of actors because they absolutely love it’.

Nicola also posted a photograph taken on set during her birthday, with members of the Featherington and Bridgerton households sitting around the table for a dinner scene.

‘I had to do livid acting in this scene but IRL I was full of birthday delight,’ the actor tweeted.

Several people wished Nicola happy birthday on social media, including Queer Eye star Bobby Berk, who wrote: ‘Happy Birthday love!’

‘Happy birthday to you !!!! May this year be your best year yet,’ Doctor Who star Mandip Gill commented on Instagram.

‘Happy Birthday sweetie,’ said The Walking Dead star Eleanor Matsuura.

Nicola recently had an excellent comeback for those who criticised Bridgerton for its diverse cast.

Sharing the announcement that the series is projected to have reached 63 million households within its first four weeks, she tweeted: ‘You know the way some people were like ‘Diversity in period drama doesn’t work’….63 million households thought it did tho so.’

Bridgerton is available to watch on Netflix.
