Our Flag Means Death was discontinued after two seasons, leaving fans dissatisfied.
David Jenkins, the creator of the 2022 pirate comedy, which can be seen on BBC iPlayer in the UK, was unhappy to inform faithful followers that it was coming to an end.
‘The bad news is clear. OUR FLAG won’t be returning for a third season. We’ve sailed at the pleasure of the fine people at Max, and it brought them no joy to see this journey come to a premature end,’ he wrote on Instagram.
The news devastated his followers, prompting over 3000 responses, the majority of which expressed sympathy.
‘Like how did this happen?? I thought s2 did so well, how can this be true I’m so devastated,’ wrote user Ed and Steve.
Account Thunderbird Animates added: ‘Genuinely heartbroken, why does every show with great lgbtq rep always get cancelled :(.’
Actor Minnie Driver said she was ‘forever devoted to the heart of this show and what it literally and figuratively represented’.
‘An honor to have briefly sailed with everyone involved,’ she concluded.
Many people are surprised by the season’s conclusion, which has received great appreciation from both the public and reviewers. Rotten Tomatoes gives it an astounding 94% rating.
Despite the disappointment of the cancellation, David was eager to focus on the positives of the scenario, such as the fact that he was able to create something ‘authentically odd and genuine’ in the first place.
‘We’ve spent two seasons in a bizarre, beautifully-rendered world populated by some of the greatest actors and creatives working.
‘And the second season was made possible by the enthusiasm of one of the most likable fan communities in the history of this medium. Your voices made a difference, your art made a difference, your viewership made a difference in securing more OUR FLAG,’ David assured fans.
‘Getting to share this show with you and watching you make it yours has been a dream come true,’ he sweetly wrote.
It may be over in the usual sense, but a passionate Instagram account, Like Lady Godiva, had an idea that received over 4000 likes.
‘Okay but can you film the third season on someone’s phone in a backyard with a kiddy pool as the ocean and put them in like a wagon for the boat so everyone can see what would’ve happened?’ they suggested.
The narrative revolves around pampered nobleman Stede Bonnet, played by Rhys Darby, who abandons his cushy existence to become a pirate after experiencing a mid-life crisis, resulting in turmoil. The early 18th-century setting of the drama is largely based on a genuine tale.
The main storyline is Taika’s Captain Blackbeard and Stede falling in love.
Taika called it as ‘a really special show’ that came to a ‘natural end’ in November.
‘Just because I feel like, you know, they’ve been through so much and then wind up in that nice place at a happy ending,’ he explained to NME.
He did, however, propose that it could continue even without himself and Rhys.
A Max spokesperson confirmed the news: ‘While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of Our Flag Means Death, we are so proud of the joyous, hilarious, and heartfelt stories.’
Our Flag Means Death season one is available to watch on BBC iPlayer. Both series are available on Amazon.
