Helen George opened up on filming kissing scenes amid strict Covid measures on the set of Call The Midwife, dubbing it the most ‘unsexy thing you could do.’

Speaking at a recent Q&A ahead of the Christmas special and series 11, Helen, 37, addressed the future of a romance with Matthew (Olly Rix), who her character Trixie is continuing to grow closer to.

Seeming to confirm their blossoming relationship after the Christmas special, Helen told and other press: ’We became masters at kissing through perspex.

‘It was the most unsexy thing you could ever do!’

During the filming of the Christmas special and series 11, the cast and crew were forced to stick to very strict Covid restrictions, meaning no actual kissing took place.

She went into hilarious detail about just how the scenes are cleverly pulled off, thanks to the trickery of camera angles and a window wiper between takes.

Helen continued: ‘A man comes along with a little bit of spray and a window wiper and wipes down your spit after every take and it’s horrific.

‘It takes a while [to learn] and it was so mechanical. Do we turn our heads to the left? It was so embarrassing and just awful!’

Asked how the friendship with widow Matthew gradually turns into a relationship, Helen gave a sweet answer addressing how their storyline will develop.

She added: ‘There’s so much the way the nature of the relationship with his wife as well, it’s such a sort of deeply emotional situation, that it’s not just are they going to get together or they know, there’s so many obstacles to overcome.

‘It’s such a tricky… it’s a friendship really, and a support mechanism for it becomes for both before it becomes anything romantic.

‘I think it takes a long time for him to I think it’s one of those things everyone else possibly sees around them before they see themselves,’ Helen added.

Matthew was first introduced to the show back in series 10, alongside his wife Fiona, before she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia.

She died in heartbreaking scenes shortly afterwards, with Matthew leaning on Trixie for support as he deals with raising his young son.

The star has recently given birth to her second child, and revealed just how she managed to disguise her pregnancy through some carefully selected costumes and camera angles.

On asking how she dealt with being pregnant during filming, she replied: ‘Props, costumes, all the rest of it, my clipboards and, like camera angles.

‘So yeah, I think it’s important and I know other women do other shows and films and there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be done as long as there’s thoughts to it.

‘People can work with it, because we’re not invalids, we’re just pregnant!’

Call The Midwife series 11 begins on Sunday, January 2 at 8pm.
