Catfish UK is making its debut tonight, with hosts Julie Adenuga and Oobah Butler putting their sleuthing skills to the test to get to the bottom of a series of online dating dramas.
The show is a spin-off of the incredibly popular US version, which exposes fake personalities online by following people who have never met their partner in person.
Even though hosts of the US show Nev Shulman and Kamie Crawford won’t be fronting the UK series, they have had a part in the promotion and casting process.
The duo has handed over the reins to former Apple Music Beats 1 presenter Julie and journalist, author and filmmaker Oobah.
As everyone’s lives have moved online, it’s become easier than ever before to pretend to be someone you’re not.
Each week, the Catfish UK team will piece together information to reveal the people that are hiding behind a screen.

What is a catfish?
Catfishing is a bizarre phenomenon that was born on social media, with the term ‘catfish’ now entering our collective lexicon. But what exactly is it?
A ‘catfish’ may steal someone else’s photos, videos or personal information to create a fake profile or website when they’re creating their false identity.
Those who catfish will pretend to be someone else online to lure someone into a relationship. The reason people do this can be for a variety of reasons, such as to extract money or personal details from the victim or to embarrass someone.
The term started to become popular in 2010 and it became the topic of the 2010 documentary movie Catfish and the American TV show of the same name.
When is Catfish UK on MTV?
A UK version was originally planned in 2016 but never materialised. Thankfully now the show will finally be gracing our screens.
There is a production team helping Julie and Oobah come to a resolution with each case, and episodes are edited for pace, but neither of them knows how each story will end.
Four, hour-long episodes will air on MTV starting on Wednesday, 21 April at 9pm. You can watch MTV on NOW, TVPlayer and Virgin Media.
Who are the Catfish UK presenters, Julie Adenuga and Oobah Bulter?
Both hosts are already well known here in the UK, thanks to their various work in the media.
Julie Adenuga is best known as the former London headline host of Beats 1 radio. More recently, she is the founder of creative media house Don’t Trust The Internet, where she hosts music show Julie’s Top Five.
Her talents have been widely recognised, with mentions in Forbes’ 30 under 30, NME’s 500 Most Influential People in Britain and in Debrett’s 500 List: Music.
The 32-year-old is the sister of grime artists Skepta and Jme.
Oobah Butler knows a bit about catfishing himself, as the 29-year-old is best known for creating The Shed at Dulwich, a fake restaurant that became the top-rated venue in London on TripAdvisor in 2017, even though it had never opened its doors.
In 2018 Oobah received three awards – one from the British Society of Magazine Editors for Best Content Idea 2018, Video Project of the Year from the British Media Awards, and another from the DRUM Agency for Content Creator of the Year 2018.
In April 2019, his debut book How to Bullsh*t Your Way To Number 1 was published.
Catfish UK starts at 9pm on Wednesday 21 April on MTV UK.
