Celebrity Bake Off 2021: James McAvoy has a sneaky baking advantage going into competition

Celebrity Bake Off contestant James McAvoy has a sneaky baking advantage up his sleeve, which could give him a leg up on the competition.

On Thursday evening, the Celebrity Bake Off 2021 line-up was announced, boasting the likes of former Girls Aloud member Nadine Coyle, Little Mix star Jade Thirlwall, rapper Dizzee Rascal and Star Wars actor Daisy Ridley.

Also in the roster is James, who was recently seen in the season two finale of His Dark Materials as Lord Asriel.

While many of the celebrities who take part in the show in aid of Stand Up To Cancer will have baked before, perhaps feeling extreme pride in their delicious home bakes, James actually has a little bit of experience in the industry.

Yes, the actor best-known for starring in films including Atonement, X-Men: First Class and The Last King of Scotland actually used to work in a bakery.

While taking part in an interview in 2017 to promote M Night Shyamalan’s Split, James revealed that he ‘worked in a bakery for a couple of years’ when he was younger.

‘When I was about 16, 17, 18, 19? Yeah up to 19,’ he said.

However, James admitted to the interviewer that he hadn’t mastered the art of making croissants.

‘That’s probably why I’m not a baker,’ he added.

A decade ago during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, James recalled ‘making fairy cakes’ while working in in the bakery.

‘It was dull and I worked on my own so I used to write all the names of all the girls I wanted to sleep with in the cakes in jam. That got me through the night,’ he admitted.

Considering it’s been over 20 years since the 41 year old’s bakery-working days, could his past experience prove helpful when he’s put under the pressure of presenting delicious creations in the Bake Off tent?

We’ll just have to wait and see.

Having been replaced by comedian Tom Allen as one of the Bake Off presenters for the Christmas special, Noel Fielding will be absent yet again for Celebrity Bake Off 2021.

Noel was unable to film the show after his girlfriend Lliana Bird gave birth to their second child, which the couple announced in October.

Rather than joining Matt Lucas as presenter, Extra Slice regular Tom will try his luck as a contestant.

Celebrity Bake Off 2021 is due to air this spring on Channel 4.
