Celebrity MasterChef fans were left raging when a Channel 5 News bulletin revealed the winner of the first Christmas special before the episode had aired on BBC One.

For this year’s festive period, there are set to be two episodes of the celebrity version of the high-intensity cooking show.

In the first episode, airing tonight, the contestants in the kitchen included Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer Oti Mabuse, Loose Women panelist Judi Love, reality star Joey Essex, former professional footballer Neil Ruddock and actor Su Pollard, with Judi being crowned the winner.

However, before viewers had a chance to watch how the competition would unfold, the news on Channel 5 unveiled the winner in an unfortunate leak.

Channel 5 News apologised for the error in a statement shared on Twitter, which read: ‘We would like to say sorry for mistakenly announcing the winner of BBC1’s Celebrity Masterchef before it was revealed on the programme tonight. Apologies to all fans of the show.’

People who had tuned into the news on the channel immediately expressed their fury over the mishap, with one tweeting: ‘Well thanks, “not” for telling me who’s going to win the programme I’m about to watch on BBC 1!!!!’

Another wrote: ‘Well done @5_News for giving a spoiler, without warning, on the 8pm news today of the winner of Celebrity @MasterChefUK showing later in [the] evening.’

One person said that their wife was ‘seriously p**sed’ about the spoiler, having been waiting to watch the episode at 8pm.

‘I’m literally just recording the first of two programmes right now!!!! Thanks a bunch!!!’ someone else stated.

In an unlucky turn of events, one Twitter user said that it was the first time they had ever watched Channel 5 when they had the winner spoiled for them.

The second Christmas special, due to air later this week, will feature reality star Gemma Collins, actor Joe Swash, entertainer Les Dennis, singer Mica Paris and musician Reverend Richard Coles.

As usual, judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode will be sharing their expertise as they decide who will win both heats of the series.

Last week, chef Dan Lee won the latest season of MasterChef: The Professionals in a nail-biting final.

He spoke to about his wish to open up a street food truck that’s affordable and accessible, while also expressing his heartbreak over restaurants struggling amid rising cases of Covid-19.

The second Celebrity MasterChef Christmas special airs on Thursday December 23 at 9pm on BBC One.
