Celebrity MasterChef star Kadeena Cox has opened up about the last-minute panic viewers didn’t get to see during the stressful finale, which saw her beat Megan McKenna and Joe Swash to become the winner.

After several weeks of tough competition, it was finally announced that Paralympic champion Kadeena, 30, had been crowned the winner of BBC’s Celebrity MasterChef.

Kadeena, who won two gold medals at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, astounded judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace with her final three-course meal, which saw her serve up a starter of torched salmon with tempura prawn, a main of a Caribbean curried goat pie and a rack of lamb, and a show-stopping dessert of Choux au Craquelin filled with mascarpone whipped cream.

However, while speaking to Metro.co.uk, the athlete admitted that she only managed to complete her dishes in the nick of time.

Kadeena said that viewers may have briefly caught the moment when her shrimp became stuck to the bottom of the fryer.

What they may not have realised was that with five minutes to go, she had ‘pretty much nothing’ on her plates.

‘I think it was briefly shown, but my shrimp didn’t quite go to plan. They got stuck to the bottom of the fryer,’ Kadeena recalled.

‘At that point I think we were like five minutes away from having to serve, my shrimp was stuck to the bottom of the fryer, I’d not long got my Choux buns out of the oven, and I hadn’t even made my mascarpone whip.’

Kadeena stressed that with only minutes to go before the judges called time on the challenge, all she had to serve was her hazelnut praline, which was the first thing that she’d made.

‘I literally had pretty much nothing on the plate five minutes to go. It was a little bit stressful, I’m not going to lie,’ she said.

While the star chef might have been a bucket of nerves on the inside, on the surface, she seemed as cool as a cucumber.

When she served the meal to the judges, John said that he was ‘amazed’ she managed to get all of the components ready in time.

‘Last-minute queen,’ Kadeena dubbed herself in the episode, as John let out a sigh of relief.

After Kadeena was announced as the winner, she said that she was ‘absolutely buzzing’, telling the camera: ‘This smile is not disappearing from my face for a while. I’m just proud of myself for doing it. I didn’t change who I was. I learned along the way, but I was still Kadeena right to the end.’

Kadeena told Metro.co.uk how proud she feels over the many messages she’s received from fans who also have multiple sclerosis, saying that a lot of people have reached out to say that they’ve been ‘in tears’ watching her progress on MasterChef.

When Kadeena was 23 years old, she suffered a stroke, before being diagnosed with MS a few months later.

MS is a lifelong condition that can affect the brain and spinal cord and can cause symptoms including arm and leg movement being impacted, in addition to problems with vision, sensation and balance.

The athlete said that several people who have messaged her have said that she’s encouraged them to try and become more active, with some who are less mobile saying that they are going to try and do more exercises in bed.

One girl who reached out to Kadeena said that the Paralympic champion has helped ‘to alleviate her fear’, having been diagnosed with MS within the last couple of weeks.

‘Those messages are literally why I do what I do. Sometimes it’s horrible to push yourself and the training’s not always fun, it’s hard work,’ Kadeena said.

‘I get frustrated but being able to show people that it still can be done, it’s all worth it.’

Kadeena has an extremely busy schedule in the months ahead, as she looks forward to competing in cycling at the World Championships around February and March 2022 and in athletics at the Europeans in June, the Commonwealth Games in July and the Worlds in August.

While her aim is to come home with gold after each sporting competition, she also expressed an interest in pursuing her passion for cooking by presenting a cooking show or writing a cookbook, adding that she’s currently in the process of setting up a baking business.

What’s more, we could even see Kadeena grace the Strictly dancefloor next year.

‘My all-time goal is to do Strictly Come Dancing. If anyone wants to give me the call up, I’m waiting,’ she said. Strictly – what are you waiting for?!

Celebrity MasterChef is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
