Charlie Brooker’s Death To 2020 cast had just one day to film new Netflix special

The cast of Death To 2020, from Black Mirror creators Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, had just one day to film their scenes.

The stars of the upcoming Netflix special, which includes the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Grant, Kumail Nanjiani, Lisa Kudrow, Laurence Fishburne, and Joe Keery, were put through their paces and shot their sequences with just a camera operator and a director.

Speaking about the unique filming experience at the virtual press conference, Friends actress Kudrow said the whole shebang was ‘fun’.

‘I think Charlie and Annabel were watching some kind of feed,’ she recalled.

‘I did have permission to pick up things and do some other things, the only adjustment for me was that there was a teleprompter, so that helped.’

Kudrow plays non-official spokesperson Jeanetta Grace Susan in the special, which is a look back at the events of the year that was (and still is).

Meanwhile, Keery, who plays gig economy millennial Duke Goolies, added: ‘The writing is so solid and clever, it makes it really easy to play with the truth of the character.’

The scripts for Death To 2020 were forever evolving too, thanks to the unpredictable nature of events that unfolded.

According to Brooker, the show was first conceived in July.

‘The main stories that we focus on are huge global stories,’ Jones disclosed. ‘We knew what the structure of the show was going to be but with quite a few surprises along the way.’

She added: ‘I don’t think there was that much that we dropped from the script. It was sort of about being as reactive as possible and as topical.’

Death To 2020 launches Sunday 27th December on Netflix.
