Ex-WWE star Chavo Guerrero has backed Chris Benoit’s son David to get into the wrestling business.
The former Cruiserweight Champion – who lost his uncle Eddie Guerrero in November 2005 and close friend Chris 18 months later – has opened up on David’s plans to break into the pro wrestling world.
Chavo pointed out that Benoit’s son shouldn’t be held back by his father’s double murder-suicide, when he killed his wife Nancy and seven-year-old son Daniel over one weekend in June 2007.
He told Chris Van Vliet on YouTube: ‘I want him to [get into wrestling]. I would love for him to do that. It’s tough, because he looks so much like his father.
‘And it’s something that — man, it sucks for him, because he just got played just a raw hand. You know, he didn’t do anything wrong, but yet he still suffers from the consequences of his father, and the circumstances that surrounded his death.
‘And it’s such a poor guy, man, he still gets it. And he’s probably like me, just wanted to be a wrestler too. With him, it’s something that — it’s kind of “the ball’s in his court.” ‘
David has been open about his wrestling ambitions – albeit not necessarily in WWE – and he has even suggested in the past he would like to adopt his dad’s name, ring gear and entrance music.
In a previous interview – also with Chris Van Vliet – he said: ‘I have his middle name. I can legally use it if I want to.
‘Yeah [I would wrestle as Chris Benoit Jr]. I think that would be cool. I got the tights with the claw.’
Chavo – was received a text from Benoit shortly before he took his own life – pointed out that David would never be able to match his late dad’s wrestling ability.
‘Yeah, he’ll never fill those shoes. You can’t fill shoes of Chris Benoit, of a Bret Hart, of a Shawn Michaels, of an Eddie Guerrero, of a Rey Mysterio,’ he added.
‘You just can’t. You can just be you. You know? Look at Dominik Mysterio right now, coming up. Is he Rey Mysterio? No, you know? But he’s kicking butt. He’s Dominik, and I tell him the same thing.
‘”You — man, just be you.” He’s being sheltered right now, he’s being led and protected in WWE. There’ll be a time that he won’t have that protection around him. He’s going to have to be himself.’
