Christmas Eve TV guide: The best shows from Worzel Gummidge to Great Christmas Bake Off 2020

There’s just one more sleep until Christmas Eve, so it’s definitely time to start thinking about what television specials to tune into on the big day.

The BBC released its TV guide earlier this month, with ITV and Channel 4 also following suit with its festive offerings – and from Worzel Gummidge to Great Christmas Bake Off, there’s plenty to get stuck into.

Not sure what’s worth watching?

Fear not, as we’ve compiled a list of highlights.

Mackenzie Crook is returning for a brand new special of Worzel Gummidge, following the success of last year’s installments.

This year though, the walking, talking scarecrow has a pal – Saucy Nancy (Shirley Henderson), who is sure to ruffle Worzel’s hay.

The one-hour special is a guaranteed fave for young families.

Missing Bake Off? Well fear not, as Paul Hollywood, Prue Leith and Matt Lucas are joined by Tom Allen to celebrate Christmas in the famous white tent.

This year’s special will see former contestants James Hillery from the 2017 series, Ruby Bhogal, from the 2018 series, and Rosie Brandreth-Poynter and Jamie Finn from the 2019 series go head to head for the Christmas Star Baker title.

Sadly though folks, Noel Fielding won’t be appearing in the special as he was on paternity leave during filming.

If you’re looking for a laugh, then Would I Lie To You? At Christmas is not one to be missed.

Jo Brand, Joe Lycett, Joe Swash and Ruth Madeley join team captains David Mitchell and Lee Mack for this festive edition of the comedy game show, hosted by Rob Brydon.

Did one of the panellists really program a satnav so their mother’s trip to Lakeside ended up in the Lake District?

And did one of the captains really hold up a train to get his daughter’s cuddly toy back? Or were they just festive fibs?

While there’s still no word on more episodes, the Beeb is treating viewers to another screening of last year’s Gavin And Stacey’s Christmas special.

The festive favourite sees the Shipmans travel to Wales to spend Christmas with the Wests, but for Gavin and Stacey, parenthood continues to present them with several challenges – and their baby is now nine.

Meanwhile, Smithy also continues to commit to his fatherly role, making the journey to Barry at weekends and every second Wednesday to see 12-year-old Neil the baby.

A stellar line-up, right?

At the end of the show the guests play Jonathan’s now traditional game of Pie Face and Jess performs her Christmas track, This Christmas.

We have no doubt it will be filled with innuendos.
