Countdown viewers cringed and laughed in equal measure as Anne Robinson made a joke about Matt Hancock in her first episode.
The former Weakest Link host made her debut on Channel 4’s long-running game show on Monday after taking over from Nick Hewer.
At one point, she had a chat with impressionist Rory Bremner about which politicians he’s been able to impersonate during the coronavirus pandemic, after his stellar job as Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
After suggesting former Health Secretary Matt Hancock, she then joked: ‘I’m not sure Matt Hancock can do Matt Hancock actually.’
The scenes were filmed before Mr Hancock resigned from his role as Health Secretary after footage emerged of him breaking social distancing rules by kissing his aide, Gina Coladangelo, in May.
Viewers couldn’t help but laugh at the timing of the conversation, with one tweeting: ‘What a day to mention Hancock.’
‘I don’t think anyone wants to do Matt Hancock at the moment,’ another joked.
One added: ‘Great timing with the Matt Hancock impressions from Rory Bremner.’
‘It’s Anne Robinson’s first day presenting countdown today, and she just asked Rory Bremner to do an impression of “The Health secutary Matt Hancock”. That pre-recorded episode didn’t age well,’ an amused viewer remarked.

Anne’s first episode began with a clip of her appearing on Countdown in the 70s with late host Richard Whiteley sitting in the main chair. She’s now part of an all-female panel with regular presenters Rachel Riley and Susie Dent.
