Strictly Come Dancing fans were convinced they’d seen a famous face in the background of Saturday night’s show, confusing one of the professional dancers for Curtis Pritchard.

The BBC series was back with a bang over the weekend, welcoming the likes of Nicola Adams, Clara Amfo and Maisie Smith for their ballroom debuts.

But one of the unlikely stars of the show turned out to be one of the backing dancers, who fans mistakenly identified as Love Island’s Curtis during a performance to Shakira’s Hips Don’t Lie.

It’s easy to see why fans were confused – Curtis, the brother of former Strictly pro AJ Pritchard, is a professional dancer himself, and the 24-year-old reality star even appeared on Ireland’s version of Dancing With The Stars.

The newcomer who viewers confused Curtis with on Saturday night was a mystery figure at first, but he has now been revealed as 25-year-old dancer Kai Widdrington.

The dancer joined Strictly this year, having previously reached the final of Britain’s Got Talent as a dancer in the show’s sixth series.

Kai took the mistaken identity in his stride after Saturday’s live show, responding by posting a picture of the original story to his Instagram page and writing: ‘Pretty sure that’s me out there.’

Curtis, too, added fuel to the fire by posting the story on his Instagram and writing: ‘Was it me or was it not me the mystery continues’

Kai is one of the new faces on Strictly come dancing this year, and he previously shared his joy at joining the show on his Twitter page.

‘So delighted to be a part of the group numbers of this incredible production that is Strictly Come Dancing,’ he wrote, adding a picture of the male dancers on the show.

‘What an opening it was last Saturday and there are plenty more incredible group dances coming to your screens in the coming weeks!’ he added.

Curtis might not have appeared on last Saturday’s show, but don’t rule out an appearance in the future – the reality star recently hinted that he would be keen to join the series as a professional dancer ‘when the time is right’.

Meanwhile, Curtis’s brother AJ announced his departure from Strictly Come Dancing in March and has now claimed that the show ‘wouldn’t let him do things’ during his time there.

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturdays, on BBC One.
