Dame Joan Collins recalls offending ‘boring’ member of royal family as Phillip Schofield gasps with shock

Dame Joan Collins has recalled the offence she caused when she wrote about a member of the royal family, leaving Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby in a state of shock.

On Thursday’s edition of This Morning, Dame Joan made an appearance to talk about her new book, My Unapologetic Diaries.

As the title implies, the Dynasty star has no qualms about openly sharing her unapologetic opinions, including her views on other people in the public eye.

While sitting in the ITV studio for her interview, Phillip asked Dame Joan whether she has ever offended anyone with her no-holds-barred approach.

The 88-year-old explained that she found out that a member of the royal family had taken umbrage to something she said about them.

‘I got a report that one member of – well, not necessarily one of the frontline royals – but one of the royals related was offended by what I said about him. But it was reported to me by somebody else who was a royal and said he’s one of the most boring members of the royal family, so I wrote that,’ she said.

Phillip’s jaw dropped at Dame Joan’s admission, while Holly smiled in amusement.

Continuing with her story, the actor said that the royal in question ‘didn’t like it’, adding: ‘He said to a friend, “Why would she write that?” And so the friend said, “Well maybe because you are.”’

At this point, Phillip and Holly’s facial expressions mirrored each other, with the co-hosts gasping in astonishment.

‘This is not going to be hard to track down, is it really?’ Phillip remarked.

‘No you can read it, it’s in there. I’m not going to say it on national TV,’ Dame Joan responded.

Phillip also suggested that the story could be the basis for ‘the beginning of the next book’.

Pretending to consider the idea, the author said: ‘Oh you think? Oh yeah, “how I trashed the royals”,’ before quickly adding: ‘No, I wouldn’t do that.’

In 1997, Dame Joan received an OBE in the New Year Honours list for services to drama.

In 2015, 18 years later, she was made a Dame for services to charity.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
