Dancing on Ice 2021 viewers have criticised a remark made about Joe-Warren Plant’s Emmerdale character after his first routine during tonight’s launch show.
In the first episode of the new series, Joe-Warren and his skating partner Vanessa Bauer delivered an energetic performance to Sucker by the Jonas Brothers.
Despite an unfortunate tumble on the ice, Joe-Warren, 18, put on an impressive performance.
However, at the end of the routine, before he and Vanessa received their critique from the judges, a voiceover could be heard saying: ‘If he’s anything like the character he plays on Emmerdale, he’s pretty good with female authority figures.’
The actor, who has played Jacob Gallagher on Emmerdale since 2010, was involved in a storyline where his character was groomed by a teacher, Maya Stepney (Louisa Clein).
Several people watching Dancing on Ice found the apparent reference to Joe-Warren’s experience with ‘female authority figures’ on the soap inappropriate, with one person saying: ‘Probably should’ve left this bit out the script’.
‘Wrong thing to say on about Jacob off #Emmerdale,’ one person tweeted.
‘“If he’s anything like his character in Emmerdale he’s good with female authority figures” risky comment seeing as he was groomed on Emmerdale..,’ another said.
Someone else remarked: ‘A Grooming joke… Really?’
After Joe-Warren fell over on the ice during his routine, he received praise from viewers who applauded him for getting up straight away.
‘Aww bless him, he got up and carried on,’ one person said.
‘Impressed with Joe-Warren! Such a shame about the fall but it didn’t take away from his brilliant performance,’ another commented.
Dancing on Ice returns next Sunday at 6pm on ITV.
