Dancing on Ice contestant Sonny Jay revealed he almost had a ‘mental breakdown’ during his first rehearsal.
The Capital Breakfast DJ and his dance partner Angela Egan took to the rink on Sunday where they performed a stunning routine to Clean Bandit and Jess Glynne’s hit Rather Be.
The 27-year-old, who received the judge’s Golden Ticket at the beginning of the series, scored an impressive 29.5 out of 40.
Despite feeling confident on the ice now, that wasn’t always the case for Sonny, who is juggling hosting Capital Breakfast with rehearsals for the show.
‘I nearly had a mental breakdown,’ Sonny told us.
‘It was the first week that I had learned a routine from scratch. I found it so hard baring in mind I get up early in the morning, my concentration is all over the place.’
‘I get in on Tuesday and get a routine thrown at me and I’m like, “Okay, cool. Yeah, I’ve got to learn that within a couple of days”,’ he added.
‘And then weirdly, it just all comes together.’
For Valentine’s weekend, Sonny and Angela will take to the ice dressed as Popeye and Olive and will skate to TikTok legend Nathan Evans’ Wellerman.
We hope Sonny eats his spinach beforehand…
Speaking about how rehearsals are going so far for this weekend, Sonny continued: ‘You sort of go in and think “What would Popeye do on ice?” which is hard to imagine.
‘It’s just one of those things where you go “What would work with the character we are doing?” and then suddenly within an hour and a half, Dan and Karen who are the choreographers. weirdly have a routine.’
Dancing on Ice returns on Sunday at 6pm on ITV.
