The new series of Dancing With The Stars has kicked off with a bang, with the opening night proving one of the biggest in the show’s history.
As Strictly Come Dancing fans wait for the BBC competition to officially commence this week, across the pond, Dancing With The Stars was underway last night with a spectacular premiere, which saw JoJo Siwa make history with the first ever same-sex dance.
There were several other big talking points from the night, including Melanie Chisholm paying homage to her Spice Girls roots, Olivia Jade Giannulli referencing the college admissions scandal and Brian Austin Green bringing his real-life romance to the dancefloor.
With so much going on in just the first episode, we can’t wait to see what the rest of the series has in store.
Here are the highlights from the show-stopping Dancing With The Stars season 30 premiere.
JoJo Siwa makes history with same-sex dance
This summer, it was announced that former Dance Moms star JoJo had joined Dancing With The Stars as part of the first ever same-sex couple on the show.
As the first episode of the series aired on Monday September 20, JoJo took to the dancefloor with her professional partner Jenna Johnson, who first joined the show in 2014 before partnering up with her first celeb two years later.
For their first routine, JoJo and Jenna performed a Quickstep, wearing matching hot pink trousers and orange and neon green tops.
They ended up on the top of the leaderboard with a score of 29 out of a possible 40 as fans celebrated the YouTube personality making history on the programme.
Mel C brings Sporty Spice to the dancefloor
As if Mel C could take part in Dancing With The Stars without making a not-so-subtle reference to the Spice Girls?
This year, Mel is competing on the American show with Gleb Savchenko, who was previously a professional dancer on Strictly Come Dancing.
The pair brought the heat to the dancefloor with their Cha-Cha, set – predictably – to Wannabe, the debut single by the Spice Girls released in 1996.
Now we’re just waiting for Mel and Gleb to slam it to their left with a performance set to Spice Up Your Life. Is that too much to ask?
Olivia Jade vows not to pull ‘pity card’ after ‘scandal’
Olivia Jade, daughter of actor Lori Loughlin and fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, is one of the competitors on this year’s series of DWTS.
The 21-year-old recently became embroiled in a college admissions bribery scandal, when it was discovered that her parents paid her way into university, with both of them receiving prison sentences.
The debacle was briefly mentioned on the opening night of Dancing With The Stars, with the video segment for the celebrity saying that she had been ‘wrapped up in scandal’.
The YouTuber stressed that she does not wish to ‘pull a pity card’ on the show, as she wants to ‘move forward’ and show the public that she has a ‘different side’ to her.
Amanda Kloots pays tribute to late husband Nick Cordero
In 2020, The Talk co-host Amanda Kloots suffered the death of her husband, actor Nick Cordero, following complications related to Covid-19.
Amanda, who is competing with Alan Bersten on Dancing With The Stars, paid tribute to her late husband during the premiere, breaking down in tears in her video segment.
‘I miss him every day,’ said the 39-year-old, whose son Elvis Eduardo Cordero was born in 2019.
Judge Carrie Ann Inaba told Amanda after her Tango that she brought ‘tears to her eyes’, adding: ‘I know what you have been through. Nick is looking down on you.’
Brian Austin Green competes with real-life girlfriend
On Strictly Come Dancing, there’s a lot of talk about the ‘Strictly curse’, with several celebrities and professional dancers breaking up with their partners over the years as they find new romance on the show.
On the new series of Dancing With The Stars, Brian has found himself in an opposite scenario – competing with his real-life girlfriend, Sharna Burgess.
Brian was previously married to Megan Fox, with whom he shares three sons, Noah, Bodhi and Journey.
Earlier this year, Brian spoke out about his relationship with his ex-wife Megan – who is now dating Machine Gun Kelly – saying that they ‘get along great’ and are not ‘sending petty digs to each other’.
Dancing With The Stars airs on ABC in the US.
