Backstreet Boys star AJ McLean has been eliminated from Dancing With The Stars US – after Icons Night determined who made it through to the semi-finals.

For the latest episode of the dancing favourite, all couples had to perform a routine in honour of a musical icon, with AJ and pro partner Cheryl Burke choosing Queen’s Freddie Mercury.

They earned a respectable 23 out of 30 for their Viennese Waltz to Somebody to Love, before going head-to-head in a dance-off segment against ice-skater, Johnny Weir.

Unlike UK’s Strictly, the US dance-off is not performed everyday, rather a special performance where two competing pairs go head-to-head on the dance floor together so they are directly comparable.

AJ and Cheryl won their dance-off, after impressing with a jive to Wham!’s Wake Me Up Before You Go Go.

But in a shock public vote result, AJ and Johnny found themselves facing off once again in the bottom two, with the judges left in charge of who to save.

All judges admitted they didn’t know who to choose – torn between AJ and Cheryl, who won the dance-off, and Johnny and his partner Britt Stewart earning a perfect score in their main routine.

Ultimately, Bruno Tonioli saved Johnny and Britt, and Derek Hough voted in favour of AJ and Cheryl.

It came down to final judge Carrie Ann Inaba, who, begrudgingly, chose to also save Johnny and Britt.

As a result, the semi finalist line-up is now complete, with just two more episodes to go before we find out who raises the glitterball.
