Davina McCall is preparing to host what has been dubbed ‘middle-aged Love Island,’ and the show now has an official name – My Mum, Your Dad.
The programme, which was originally known as Romance Retreat, will premiere in the autumn, and ITV has also revealed the premise for the brand-new offering.
The folks seeking for love, as the title indicates, are all single parents from throughout the UK, and their grown-up children are the ones who nominated them to take part in this romantic journey, but there’s a twist!
‘Unbeknownst to the parents, their kids will be watching their every move from a nearby location called ‘The Bunker’,’ ITV explained.
The daters will be constantly watched, and the kids will have some say over what happens at the country house retreat where all the singles will be residing while looking for love. The nominees will have ‘the opportunity to play matchmaker and select their mother or dad’s dating fate.’
It’s safe to say we’re sold.
The series will be shorter than Love Island, with 10-hour-long episodes, so the single hopefuls will have to work hard and swiftly determine which baskets to deposit their eggs in.
ITV added: ‘From humorous moments to heartwarming confessions, the kids will see their parents in a whole new light as they are presented with opportunities to select who they’ll be matched with on one-to-one dates, and who may join the family celebrations for years to come.
‘Get the tissues at the ready as we witness the highs and the lows, the tears and the funny moments, of finding love again,’ they concluded.
Davina, 55, is ecstatic about this new TV project because she was the one who pleaded for it to happen.
She previously spoke to Steven Bartlett on his podcast, Diary of a CEO about her ambition.
‘I’m literally begging ITV to let me present mid-life Love Island. I could fill a villa in Love Island with the best backstories you have ever heard in your life.’
Her perseverance paid off, and she has now expressed her delight at being in charge of the programme.
‘Thank goodness the secret is finally out! I’ve been bursting to tell,’ she began.
‘I’m so so excited to host My Mum, Your Dad – this show will have you so invested in the people in it.
‘Fascinating, vibrant individuals who have lived incredible lives already, with a million life lessons under their belts, as they search for their perfect life partner. But also with the juiciest twist of any show I’ve ever worked on.’
Lifted Entertainment, which revived Love Island in 2015, clearly knows how to make a dating programme popular (and addicting).
Managing Director Richard Cowles wanted to prove that ‘dating isn’t just for teenagers,’ so he collaborated with father and daughter team Haley and Greg Daniels, who came up with the idea.
