Ben Miller led the Death In Paradise cast when the show first launched in 2011, and now he’s back for the 10th anniversary.
Playing DI Richard Poole, the character introduced us to the world of Saint Marie and its ludicrously huge murder rate – with victims being killed off in increasingly elaborate circumstances.
However, his return has sparked some confusion…. because Poole became one of the crime statistics after being murdered in 2014.
So how exactly did he die, who killed him… and did he actually survive?
Here’s everything we know so far ahead of the show’s return.
How did DI Richard Poole die?
In the first episode of season three, Poole was found dead after being stabbed in the heart with an ice pick.
The culprit was a former Cambridge University student he met at a reunion, who was a fraudster. Rather than come clean about their misdeeds, they killed Poole after he found out.
The Detective Inspector’s shock demise brought the introduction of Humphrey Goodman, played by Kris Marshall, to take his place.
How is DI Poole returning?
Speaking on GMB, Ben has kept tight-lipped about his return, though admitted himself he thought he ‘was a goner’ before the new scripts.
‘We’re very lucky to have a great number of old fans of Death in Paradise and there’s been a lot of speculation,’ he then teased.
‘The one [theory] I liked was that I’m coming back as a zombie!’ he joked, before adding his return was ‘beautifully done’.
When is Death In Paradise back on BBC One?
Series 10 of Death In Paradise kicks off Thursday, January 7 at 9pm, and will continue weekly on BBC One.
It’s also been confirmed that the show has been commissioned for two more series in the future.
Currently, Ralf Little is leading the cast as DI Neville Parker.
