Death Row’s Women With Susanna Reid: Inside Darlie Routier’s chilling case as she faces lethal injection

Good Morning Britain’s Susanna Reid meets death row inmate Darlie Routier in tonight’s new documentary Death Row Women With Susanna Reid for ITV’s Crime & Punishment strand.

The broadcaster travels to Texas, home of the most active death chamber in the United States, to meet with the inmate, who denies murdering her two young sons.

For 23 years, Dallas housewife and former cheerleader Routier has claimed she had no part in the murders of both sons, who were stabbed to death just a few feet away from where she was sleeping.

Routier was convicted and sentenced to death by legal injection for killing one of her sons and remains accused of murdering the other – despite there being no eyewitnesses, no confession and no motive.

Decades on, Routier has refused a route off Death Row in exchange for her accepting her guilt.

Who is Darlie Routier and what are her crimes?

Routier was a suburban housewife living with her husband and three children.

She was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of her five-year-old son Damon in 1996. She has also been charged with capital murder in the death of her six-year-old son, Devon, who was murdered at the same time.

To date, Routier has not specifically been tried for Devon’s murder.

Her sons were both stabbed to death with a large kitchen knife in Routier’s home, while Routier sustained knife wounds to her throat and arm.

Routier said her screams awakened her husband, Darin, who was upstairs with their infant son Drake. Darin rushed down and tried without success to revive one of the two sons.

Routier told authorities that the crime was perpetrated by an unidentified intruder.

During the trial, the prosecution argued that Routier’s injuries were self-inflicted, that the crime scene had been staged, and that she murdered her sons because of the family’s financial difficulties.

However, the defence argued there was no reason Routier would have killed her children, and that the case did not have a motive, a confession, or any witnesses.

In February 1997, the jury found Routier guilty of the murder of Damon, and sentenced her to death by lethal injection.

Routier maintains her innocence. Two of her appeals, based on allegations of irregularities during the trial were denied, however, new DNA tests were ordered several times in response to the advancement in technology.

As of this year, testing is still ongoing.

In June 2011, Darin filed for divorce from Routier, saying that the decision was mutual and ‘very difficult,’ and that he still believes his wife is innocent.

Death Row’s Women With Susanna Reid airs tonight at 9pm on ITV.
