Death To 2020: Richard Osman defends Netflix mockumentary as viewers divided

Charlie Brooker’s Death To 2020 hasn’t exactly earned rave reviews – but Pointless star Richard Osman is firmly on the side of the Netflix mockumentary.

The one-off film, which takes a satirical look on the past year and its increasingly bizarre events, has been slammed by critics as ‘stale and repetitive’, with viewers either loving or hating the latest venture by the Black Mirror creators.

But Osman has come to the defence of the show, and has urged his followers to be kind and ‘recommend something else’ if they didn’t like it.

He wrote: ‘Really loved #DeathTo2020. Taking satirical stupidity Stateside. So many brilliant lines. Great work from Charlie Brooker, Annabel Jones and the gang.

‘As always, if you disagree, that’s fine, but instead of letting me know, just recommend something else you love!’

The refreshingly nice take of the show has been supported by his fans, with many quoting their favourite lines and sharing their best moments.

‘I quite liked it. Diane Morgan and Lisa Kudrow were the embodiment of 2020,’ said one.

‘Absolutely adored it…,’ said another. ‘Lockdown, the most successful franchise since the Marvel Comic Universe.’

Others who didn’t enjoy it followed Osman’s rules and instead recommended other things to watch.

‘Just caught up with The Virtues and I May Destroy You,’ one suggested. ‘I’m guessing you have seen both but if you haven’t, both are superb. It’s been a fun Christmas.’

‘Loved Death To 2020,’ another added. ‘One of my fave movies on Netflix is The Meyerowitz Stories. And if you haven’t watched the two seasons of You then that’s good.

‘Plus all of Ozark is fantastic.’

We have to agree – Ozark is amazing.

There was an air of mystery around Death to 2020, with the title seemingly a reference to Black Mirror episode Hated In The Nation, sparking rumours it was a new episode of the anthology series.

Others believed it to be an all-star cast version of Brooker’s Yearly Wipe, which earned Bafta nods and returned briefly earlier this year for a coronavirus special titled Anti Viral Wipe.

However, instead fans were given a mockumentary counting down what happened this year – from Australia’s fires through to the Presidential campaign fight between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

Death To 2020 is available now on Netflix.
