Denise Welch fought back her tears as Loose Women paid tribute to her late dad Vin Welch after his death in September aged 84.
The TV star returned to the ITV daytime show on Monday weeks after her beloved dad died following several health issues, including pulmonary fibrosis, and she was overcome with emotion after producers aired a video in his memory.
Vin had appeared on the show a number of times over the years, and they remembered the late ‘legend’ with clips of him wearing a wedding dress as well as videos of him in the audience and from social media.
As she started to cry, a visibly emotional Denise said: ‘I was lucky to have him for 63 years… Lincoln loved him like a dad, you know, but we’re very lucky that we are from such a close family… Thank for that tribute, to the producers, because it really means a lot.’
Before the tribute aired, the 63-year-old star admitted her dad was a huge fan of the programme and she added her fellow presenters were a big part of his amazing life.
‘You girls have been part of that life lived,’ she said. ‘He loved this show.’
Paying her own respects as Monday’s Loose Women got underway, Denise admitted bosses had been ‘very respectful’ of her need for some time away as she mourns her dad.
‘I’m OK, thank you. I didn’t feel ready to come back till now, and obviously this show was very respectful of that. It’s weird because of course last time I was here, I was asking you all to celebrate with me,’ she said, noting how her dad had made a ‘valiant recovery’ after ‘a long illness this year’.
She explained: ‘We sort of loved him back to health, we felt, and then he got what started as a temperature, he had some paracetamol and it went down. We thought, you don’t get panicky about something like that.
‘Unfortunately, he had to go into hospital – he was furious he had to go back in. We kept saying, “Dad, you’ve got to, it’s only for a few days”… Unfortunately, it wasn’t just two or three days.
‘He had pulmonary fibrosis which he’d lived with and hadn’t really caused him that much of a problem, but the pneumonia on top, he just couldn’t beat.’
Denise revealed how the family were with him when he died, while they decided not to tell Vin that he wouldn’t be coming out of hospital.
‘We were all with him when he went,’ she added. ‘I suppose I take gratitude from the fact that dad thought he was coming out for the Ryder Cup, and by that time he wasn’t really quite aware.
‘And we were able to be with him, and protect him from knowing. It wasn’t something dad would have ever wanted to do know, or indeed admitted.’
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
