Dermot O’Leary mocks past tension with Alison Hammond as they celebrate one year on This Morning: ‘We used to hate each other’

This Morning hosts Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond celebrated a huge milestone on Friday, leading to the pair cheekily teasing they used to ‘hate each other’ when they started.

Alison and Dermot have been holding the fort in recent days as Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield take an extended break from the show.

The pair will return to their Friday slot next week but on the latest instalment of the show, they had something big to celebrate.

As they excitedly started off the mid-morning programme, Dermot teased: ‘We’ll get to yesterday in a minute, we need to live in the present.’

Alison agreed, with her co-star continuing: ‘I need to… allow me this brief moment of indulgence. Did you know today is our one-year anniversary?’

Dermot got out of his seat as he revealed his surprise for Alison – a delicious looking cake.

‘It’s been a year since we arrived here, we’ve served our probation, we’re full-time!’ he shared, leading Alison to gush about her excitement over the milestone.

‘Happy anniversary you wonderful being,’ Dermot added, before teasing: ‘Considering we used to hate each other…’

‘We’ve never hated each other, we’ve always loved each other,’ Alison told viewers, with Dermot weighing in: ‘Now we really love each other!’

The pair have previously spoken about their slightly rocky start, after having been ‘thrown’ together when they began presenting their slot.

‘We literally were thrown together, like an arranged marriage,’ recalled Alison. ‘It took about two months before we became comfortable.’

Dermot explained: ‘When you start a show and you start with someone they normally go, “Oh you need to meet so and so. This is the person we’re thinking about pairing you with.”

‘You go out for lunch or you have a meeting. But this was literally like, “you’re on air in half an hour.”

The pair admitted they had a few things to iron out in the first couple of months, and had to be honest about what they ‘didn’t like’ about each other.

‘We had a few private chats – “I don’t like this about you; well I don’t like this when you do such and such.”

‘All really tiny small things but the fact we were honest and able to talk to each other, I think that’s why it’s worked.’

‘It isn’t like we didn’t like each other!’ Dermot insisted. ‘It was just, “I didn’t know you were going to do that and it threw me.”’

Luckily, the duo have made it through a whole year of Friday mornings together, with viewers routinely praising the presenters.

Alison sweetly told those watching she wished for ‘another 10 years’ with Dermot as she blew out the candle on their cake.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
