Desperate Housewives star James Denton has admitted he was never comfortable being called the hottest man on TV’.

The actor, now 58, played Mike Delfino – the love interest of Teri Hatcher’s alter ego Susan Mayer – for eight series between 2004 and 2012, and one moment in particular has always followed him.

Asked about his sex symbol reputation, he told Australia’s The Morning Show: ‘No, I was never OK with it. I spent most of my career playing bad guys until Housewives.

‘I had never been hunky. I was happy to be there, don’t get me wrong, but it was uncomfortable. It follows me forever, that shirtless shot in the front yard.’

James even insisted he wasn’t in ‘very good shape’ for the shirtless scene despite working hard once he read the script.

He added: ‘I got the scene and spat out the pizza and threw the beer down, went straight to the gym and I still didn’t get into very good shape.’

Desperate Housewives – which also starred Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria – was set on fictional Wisteria Lane and followed the lives of its suburban families, and the star admitted a definitive ‘downside’ to his role was impact it ended up having on his career opportunities.

‘I had trouble getting seen for anything that was a suit and tie role or maybe a politician,’ he said.

‘Anything like that that wasn’t blue-collar, I had a little trouble right after Housewives. But you’ll never hear me complain.’

Since the end of the show, he’s gone on to appear in the likes of Stranded in Paradise, Devious Maids, NCIS New Orleans and Good Witch.

Earlier this year, Marcia – who played Bree Van de Kamp on the show – shrugged off speculation of a 10-episode reboot on Hulu.

Taking to Twitter, she responded to a post making the claim that new eps were on the way, writing: ‘News to me!!’

The post she was replying to claimed that a reboot is in the ‘final stages of development for a 10 episode Desperate Housewives revival.’
