Doctor calls red list international travel shake up ‘worrying’ and warns of new Covid-19 variants

Dr Amir Khan warned that any new variants of the Covid-19 virus could be ‘missed’ if fully vaccinated people returning from a green list country no longer have to take PCR tests.

A huge shake up to how international travel will work during the ongoing pandemic is expected to be announced later today.

According to reports, one of the measures thought to be revealed will see double-jabbed people required to take lateral flow tests rather than expensive PCR tests when arriving back in the UK.

On Friday’s episode of Lorraine, Dr Amir called the rumoured move ‘worrying’, and urged the focus not to be solely on whether people are vaccinated.

He explained: ‘That is very worrying I think because if you are travelling, even though they’re green countries, they’re popular destinations worldwide, people from other countries will be coming in, there will be lots of mixing.

‘There might be new variants arising and if you’re not PCR testing people, even though they’ve been double vaccinated – yes it protects you, yes it may reduce the transmission but it doesn’t stop transmission completely.

‘So if you’re not PCR testing you may not pick up new variants arriving into this country. We saw what happened last summer. People went abroad, cases went up over the winter. We saw what happened in the Spring – borders left open, Delta came in, changed the face of the pandemic. So I think borders are our weak point, we’ve gotta be really careful.

‘Cases are going up here already, number of people dying is going up as well. It is a really dangerous situation.’

He added that the focus needs to shift from whether people are fully vaccinated or not to making airports safer as people from multiple countries will be mixing.

It is believed the red list will be cut down by half and holiday hotspot Turkey is tipped to be taken off the list, according to MailOnline.

The controversial traffic light system is also set to be scrapped and replaced with simpler ‘go’ and ‘no go’ rules.

All countries on the amber list are therefore expected to turn green – which is put on the new ‘go’ list.

But people who have not been vaccinated will face tougher rules, and will have to quarantine on their return from any trip abroad.

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
