Doctor warns against singing and chanting in pubs during Euros matches: ‘I feel like a party pooper!’

Dr Amir Khan has warned against singing inside pubs as people gather to watch Euro 2020 matches, which kick off tonight.

He urged caution and reminded football fans that singing and dancing are illegal inside pubs during the ongoing pandemic, and owners could be fined for the actions of punters.

Speaking to Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway on Friday’s Good Morning Britain, he confessed he felt like a ‘party pooper’ for reminding people that the UK is not out of the woods yet with Covid-19.

Ben described the possibility of big groups in pubs as ‘a real concern’.

‘Actually wenot supposed to be celebrating and we’re still not supposed to be singing, and of course they go hand in hand, a celebration for a big football tournament where Scotland are there and Wales are there and England are there and all those nations get together.

‘You want to be able to share that experience.’

Dr Amir responded: ‘Exactly, emotions will be running high, it’s a great weekend for football.

‘It’s great that people can go to pubs to watch it but it’s now illegal to sing and dance and pub owners could be fined for it, and the reason for it, I feel like a party pooper here!’

The doctor stressed that singing football chants in large groups ‘generate aerosol particles’.

‘An individual, not so much, but the cumulative effect when there’s lots of people indoors, you’ve got aerosol particles,’ he went on.

He added that it would be hard ‘to police’ whether people sing and/or dance during matches, particularly when home nations play – starting with Wales on Saturday.

Dr Amir said: ‘Outdoors is less problematic because there’s breezes and things to move particles along. It’s more about indoor singing.

‘But it will be difficult to police. I think people will find it difficult to control their emotions.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
