Doctor Who fans are ecstatic with the news that a legend would return for the 2024 holiday special.
Ncuti Gatwa returned to his role as the Fifteenth Doctor on Christmas Day last year, having made his début in the 60th anniversary special The Giggle.
In a few months, he will reprise his role as the Time Lord as Russell T Davies resumes his reign as returning showrunner.
Russell directed the Doctor Who revival, which premiered in 2005, with Steven Moffat scripting a two-episode storyline.
From 2010 to 2017, he served as the lead writer and showrunner for the sci-fi BBC series, and he was instrumental in casting Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi.
According to reports, he will write the 2024 Christmas special.
According to RadioTimes.com, a clue was spotted that Steven was on board as the writer of the festive installment.
Producer Alison Sterling’s CV was reportedly changed to indicate her involvement in the December 25 show. with Steven named as the author.
However, the BBC refuses to provide a comment on the claim.
Russell previously stated that he will write the 2024 Doctor Who Christmas special. So we’re eager to find out for sure in due course!
Whovians were ecstatic when they heard that Steven would be returning.
Reddit user pangolintoastie wrote: ‘Given that some of the best episodes of the previous RTD era were Moffat’s, I’d be happy about this if it’s true.’
Mikel_jc said that despite Russell previously saying that he was going to helm the Christmas episode, he would ‘love’ to see Steven write for Doctor Who again, saying that his work was his ‘favourite era and episodes’.
Filmologic stated: ‘Honestly I really like Moffat’s episodes. Are they perfect? No, but they’re usually a lot of creative fun and some of them among the very best. Glad to see him return.’

Another Reddit user called IBrosiedon stressed that Steven is ‘one of the greatest Doctor who writers of all time’, highlighting the fact that ‘Russell has always been a very vocal fan’.
‘If I was RTD and tasked with saving Doctor Who and bringing it back into the mainstream after the Chibnall era then the first thing I would do is call Moffat and get him to come back and write something,’ they added.
Demerchmichael also remarked: ‘RTD and Steven Moffat out here taking a (well deserved) victory lap.’
Last month, Steven posted an Instagram photo of himself with former Doctor Who co-stars Karen Gillan and Jenna Coleman, who played Amy Pond and Clara Oswald.
‘Old friends, old man …,’ he wrote in his caption, as Russell commented underneath: ‘Oh wow! ♥️.’
