Doctor Who fans want Lydia West to replace Jodie Whittaker after watching It’s A Sin star on Bake Off Christmas special

Doctor Who fans are rallying behind Lydia West to be the next Doctor after seeing her appear on the Great British Bake Off Christmas special.

With Jodie Whittaker set to leave in 2022, the search is on for her replacement – and even Jodie herself has said Lydia would be her top choice.

Now the calls for Lydia, 28, to take over the iconic role have been reignited by fans, after she and her fellow It’s A Sin cast mates appeared on the Great Christmas Bake Off.

Just minutes after Lydia began attempting to bake a pie in the competition, her sunny attitude – even when panicking over her pie having a ‘soggy bottom’ – had viewers imaging her as the next Time Lord.

‘Lydia West gives me the best vibes!’ a Bake Off viewer said. ‘She’d make a brilliant Doctor.’

‘Lydia West has to be the next #DoctorWho,’ another urged.

Another, who may not have agreed with the star as the next incarnation before, admitted they were ‘moving towards the Lydia West as Dr Who camp’.

One Whovian already firmly in that camp said: ‘Watching #BakeOff and I’d be happy if Lydia West was back on my telly on 25th December, 2023. (In a #DoctorWho Christmas special, as the Doctor, is what I’m saying)’.

While many are warming to (or fully embracing) the idea of the young actor taking on the role, others would be happy simply to see her in the series.

Watching Lydia and It’s A Sin co-stars Olly Alexander, Nathaniel Curtis and Shaun Dooley, tackle the baking tasks on Christmas Day’s festive episode, some suggested they could all have a role.

One suggested Nathaniel could play the Doctor, with ‘Lydia, Olly and Shaun as their companions’.

‘I don’t know about you but I would be more than happy for Olly, Lydia, Nathaniel and Shaun all to be in the next series… they’re all fab,’ another said.

It’s A Sin was written by Russell T Davies, the man responsible for bringing Doctor Who back to our screens in 2005 – and who will be returning as the series showrunner next year.

Lydia rose to prominence in 2021 as she starred in the devastating Channel 4 drama, which revolved around the Aids crisis.

Lydia’s co-star Olly, who is also the Years & Years frontman, was a favourite to be the next Doctor, but while he said he was ‘flattered’ by the rumours, he says he is not in the running.

In fact, he is backing fellow It’s A Sin star Omari Douglas for the role.

Fans will have a while to wait before the next incarnation of the alien is revealed – but in the meantime, speculation is half the fun – and unlike Olly, Lydia has not shut down the persistent rumours.
