Despite introducing Millie Gibson in the Christmas episode, Doctor Who is already planning a fresh new companion for Ncuti Gatwa.
Ruby Sunday’s sharp wit and mystery origins won over fans in her fantastic Christmas premiere alongside the 15th Doctor.
However, it was later confirmed that she would only be a companion for one season, with Andor actress Varada Sethu taking over in the Tardis.
The 31-year-old actress was photographed on set in January, holding hands with Ncuti, also 31, while they filmed in 1960s-style attire.
Millie, 19, described her as ‘gorgeous’ while discussing the contentious early companion switch at the new series’ London premiere.
Teasing more about what’s to come, Ncuti added: ‘She’s brought such an amazing energy to the show and has added such an incredible dynamic to that Tardis.’
‘We three save the universe,’ the Sex Education star continued as his current co-star chimed in: ‘Save the universe!’
Showing off why their dynamic was so beloved, Ncuti laughed as he said ‘many times over’ before Millie completed the sentence with: ‘In the hottest way.’
There has been much speculation about the upcoming season, which will see showrunner Russell T Davies return.
Excited fans were teased with an appearance by The Beatles, as they speculated on the return of beloved characters ranging from Jack Harkness to Jodie Whittaker, the 13th Doctor.
Confirming Varada as the new companion, Russell shared that he ‘first worked with Varada on a BBC production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and it’s a joy to welcome her on board the TARDIS.’
‘Right now in the studio, shooting for 2025, we’ve got Ncuti, Millie and Varada fighting side by side – we need all three, because the stakes are higher than ever!’
Golda Rosheuvel, who played Bridgerton‘s Queen Charlotte, will appear as Jocelyn in the episode Space Babies.
She has already featured in the Whoniverse, including two episodes of the spin-off series Torchwood.
Doctor Who will return on BBC and Disney Plus on May 11, 2024, although fans were dissatisfied with the timing of each episode’s broadcast.
Weekly installments will be released on Disney’s streaming service at midnight, allowing American fans to watch at a more acceptable 10pm EDT.
This means that Brits will have to watch at midnight or wait until it airs on BBC One later that day to avoid spoilers on social media.
Russell attempted to downplay this because he enjoyed remarks about how unfair it was to the UK audience, from whence the programme originated.
However, this scream appears to have gone unheard, with no modifications to the airtime and no fixed TV slot yet revealed.
Doctor Who returns on May 11, 2024, at midnight on the BBC.
