Doctor Who’s John Barrowman throws support behind possible LGBT+ Doctor

John Barrowman has championed Doctor Who becoming more inclusive and introducing an LGBT storyline in the future.

The actor is returning as Captain Jack Harkness on the New Year’s Day special, Revolution Of The Daleks, with promises that the show won’t be the same after.

Speaking about the future of the show, John has thrown his support behind making the Doctor gay or gender fluid in upcoming series.

‘Of course the next Doctor could be gay,’ Barrowman told The Telegraph.

‘The Doctor could be bisexual, the Doctor could be fluid, whatever, it doesn’t matter.

‘The Doctor is an alien that can try anything and everything, and that’s where the audience is right now.’

Currently played by Jodie Whittaker, the Doctor has been regenerated 13 times throughout the show’s 57-year run.

Jodie is the first female actor to play the Doctor, with previous iterations all being white males and forming relationships with his women companions.

Captain Jack, who first appeared alongside Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor in 2005, and has always been proudly ‘omnisexual’ as he travels time and space.

He’s also always had a flirty relationship with the Doctor, no matter what version he ran into in the 15 years since.

‘Jack doesn’t recognise the shell, he recognises the two hearts and the soul of the Doctor,’ he explained.

‘Jack doesn’t give a damn that she’s in a female body, a male body or an alien body. Jack will have sex with anything with a postcode.’

‘I remember when I kissed the Doctor and Rose in the same episode, a journalist said: “Well, that was shocking for the nation.” I said: ‘Really? Because you’re probably the one who has a problem with it.”’

Doctor Who: Revolution Of The Daleks airs at 6.45pm on BBC One
