Rachel Riley is one of the mainstays of Countdown, having dazzled us with her maths wizardry since January 2009.

Riley – who recently welcomed baby daughter Noa with her partner Pasha Kovalev – took over where Carol Vorderman left off as the expert who solves the show’s numbers games – stepping in with the answers when the contestants can’t hit the target themselves.

Of course, solving a numbers game in just 30 seconds isn’t easy – which has led some to ask whether Rachel ever has to seek help when it comes to getting the correct answers.

Does Rachel solve them live on the show? Here’s what you need to know…

Does Rachel Riley do the maths herself live on Countdown?

Despite Rachel having some serious maths credentials, this is a subject which is still debated among viewers – although former contestants have previously taken to Reddit to confirm that Rachel does indeed do the maths herself.

‘Yes, and she apparently refuses to get outside help,’ one person said in answer to the question back in 2018.

Another added: ‘They have some more bods in the background but mostly it’s Rachel. Carol (Vorderman) was the same, rarely do they need help. Sometimes if they mention two or more methods that will sometimes be the other folks.’

Rachel knows a thing or two about maths, having gained a maths degree from Oriel College, Oxford, and achieving other notable successes thanks to her skills with figures – including the recent book At Sixes And Sevens, a guide to making maths easier.

However, she has previously addressed the issue of whether or not she gets help in a bizarre Twitter video back in 2018.

The clip appeared to show Rachel saying she was ‘bad at maths’ and was ‘fed the answers in my earpiece’ – leading to some confusion among her social media followers.

However, she later revealed that there was no truth in her words at all, and what she had been doing was simply taking part in a campaign for HSBC, to highlight the dangers of online fraud.

‘In the words of Celine Dion…! Think twice before you believe, what’s online!’ she tweeted.

Countdown continues weekdays on Channel 4 at 2.10pm.
